Title: Preventing Sexual Abuse in Children: A Significant Contributor to CSEC Risk

Workshop Description: Studies show that between 70% and 90% of youth who have experienced CSEC also have a history of childhood sexual abuse. Researchers have noted that sexual abuse may be a particularly strong form of childhood trauma that functions as a “gateway” trauma, initiating increased risk to other forms of victimization. Dr. Walker-Descartes will discuss the magnitude of the problem, how sexual abuse in children increases a child’s vulnerability to sex trafficking, and what we can do to prevent it. The first hour of this workshop will be a PowerPoint presentation, followed by a thirty-minute Q&A session.
